TRUCE: Echoes of Art in an Age of Endless Conclusions by Collier Schorr, Francesco Bonami, Thomas L. Friedman

"The concept of TRUCE has been developed around this simple idea of the artist as celebrant of the social and cultural forces dispersed by the wordless rage of contemporary society over the past 50 years. Peace is irrelevant because it is no long er the opposite of violence; violence exists for itself, and the path of violence has become an end as well as a means. Hence the language of aggression has become the language of development, the language of visual colonization.... The Kula is a form of exchange practiced by communities of the Trobriand Islands in Papua New Guinea's archipelago of Melanesia. When I began thinking about TRUCE I envisioned a kind of extensive exchange of images and ideas between a group of artists dis persed throughout 20 countries of the world. I was interested in the way these artists deal with their own specific contexts to understand the wider perspectives of contemporary culture, yet save their original ties to their own place. I wasn't looking at art as a product to be compared alongside other products, but as a possibility for creation of a large circle of exchanges, each related to a port of origin. I wanted to create my own private Kula where I could follow the thread of a series of thoughts u sed a currency in a system of conceptual developments. It is at the end of this transaction that I arrived at the idea of TRUCE, to be established between the world of exploitation and the realm of creation.
