We might feel tempted to rejoice over the unexpected results which this over-long study has yielded. In opposition to accepted opinion, it has shown us that we are in possession of all the 'Correspondence' of Cicero which its publishers wished to make known. Rich, varied and lively as it is, we now know that it offers us only a series of selections, going back to Antiquity. Instead we are the victims of losses deliberately and secretly inflicted on us by the propaganda of the Caesar-worshippers. Cicero's 'Correspondence' passed under the political steam-roller. The detail in which it abounds, the intense vitality it exhales, the information it brings us is nevertheless only a residuum of truth. Steeped in partisan passion, a passion fundamentally hostile to Cicero, we cannot invariably trust its evidence uncritically or without verification. Though ostensibly introduced to us by a friend, it was edited by Cicero's murderer in conformity with his designs and should therefore be used only with caution and regarded with distrust.
