The Latin alphabet in Cicero's time contained only twenty-three letters, including Y and Z, which were called Greek letters and used only in spelling words borrowed from the Greek: it had no I, no V (as distinct from U), and no W. On the other hand, its I and its U had each two sauna's, being used sometimes as vowels, sometimes as consonants.
