Comparison of the tables of contents of Books I and II of the High School English series reveals at once a similarity of plans and a close correlation of materials and assignments. Book II is a direct outgrowth on a higher level of the ninth-grade text; it strengthens and complements the work of the earlier book as well as provides a stepping stone to activities of the junior and senior years. Nor does this cor relation begin and end with the two books, for attention is drawn constantly, not only to the importance of English in itself as a means to social and cultural enjoyment, but also to the importance of the mastery of English as a basis for all other work.
The study of English is the study of the means of oral and written communication. The purpose, therefore, of Book II, like that of its predecessor, Is to lead high school students to a keener appreciation and mastery of Purpose written and spoken expression. The problem has been to secure the most adequate means to this end.
